Signs Your Dog Has Trained You, Not the Other Way Around

We spend a lot of time talking about training our dogs. Sit. Stay. Come. But if you're being honest with yourself, there's a decent chance the training has been happening in the other direction, and it's been working beautifully — on you.

The evidence

• You've developed a "guilty" walk to the kitchen — the one where you try to look casual, but your dog has already appeared from another room and is sitting there, watching, before you've even opened the cabinet.
• You know exactly which tone of voice means business, and so do they — the second one hits, they're already moving. Every other tone of voice, they've learned to fully ignore.
• You've started narrating your own actions out loud, just to manage expectations. "I'm just getting my coat, we're not going anywhere yet" is a full sentence you now say regularly to a dog.
• The guilt-trip stare has a documented success rate of nearly 100% — you know it's working, they know it's working, and somehow that doesn't make it less effective.
• You've rearranged furniture to accommodate a preferred napping spot, a better window view, or "their" side of the couch.
• Certain words are now spelled out instead of said — W-A-L-K, V-E-T — because apparently dogs can also learn to read a room, if not actual letters.
• You check with your dog before making weekend plans, even though the "checking" is really just you deciding not to disappoint them.

The one area where the training goes the other way

There's exactly one place where the leverage flips back in your favor: healthcare. Your dog can absolutely train you into an extra treat with the right look, but they can't schedule their own vet appointments, remember when their last heartworm dose was, or tell a new vet what medications they're on. That part's still entirely on you — no amount of guilt-tripping changes it.

Which, honestly, is probably for the best. Someone needs to be in charge of something around here.
